NSW is responding to the first confirmed detection of H5 bird flu in the state, following the identification of the virus in a wild bird near Hawks Nest.
At this stage, bird flu has not been detected in commercial poultry flocks, captive birds, or any other birds in NSW. There is no evidence of spread to other animals.
What can we do?
- Do not touch sick or dead birds or wildlife
- Avoid contact and keep children and pets away
- Record what you see if it is safe to do so
- Report sick or dead birds or wildlife to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
The current risk to people remains low, but it is important that we all stay informed and remain vigilant.
