About the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS)
The Remote Vocational Training Scheme is a vocational training program for medical practitioners working in remote and isolated communities throughout rural and remote Australia. Its purpose is to train doctors in remote communities for remote communities.
The four-year program provides structured distance education, mentoring and clinical supervision while participants continue to deliver general practice services within their community. The training meets the Fellowship requirements of both the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).
The program aims to:
- Facilitate access to vocational training for doctors where it may not otherwise be available.
- Support the recruitment and retention of rural and remote doctors.
- Improve access to high-quality medical services for remote communities by providing vocational training while maintaining continuity of care.
