Alcohol & other Drug / Social & Emotional Wellbeing Counsellor


About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled practitioner to join our team in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients experiencing substance misuse and non‑acute mental health challenges.

You will provide assessments, counselling, group programs and care coordination in a culturally safe, holistic and strengths‑based environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, including risk assessments, for all clients
  • Provide one‑to‑one and group counselling
  • Refer clients to internal and external services as appropriate
  • Deliver education and awareness group therapy on:
    • substance misuse risk factors
    • relapse prevention
    • responsible use and harm minimisation
    • ongoing management strategies
  • Facilitate social and emotional wellbeing programs, including DBT‑based skills and domestic/family violence education
  • Work collaboratively with clients to identify needs, set goals and develop care plans
  • Partner with Community Health staff, hospitals, GPs, specialists, NGOs and other services to ensure coordinated care
  • Maintain accurate client records, referrals, follow‑ups and documentation

Selection Criteria

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Candidates must hold a minimum qualification of Certificate IV or higher in the relevant field
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience supporting individuals with AOD issues, co‑existing mental health concerns and complex needs

Cultural Capability

  • Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing
  • Awareness of family structures, cultural practices and community contexts
  • Understanding of challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients experiencing substance misuse and mental health concerns

Professional Skills

  • Ability to deliver high‑quality, culturally safe and connected care
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based treatments and care coordination
  • Strong interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills

Administrative & Communication Skills

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and data
  • Competence with computers and common software
  • Strong written skills, including case notes and reports

Additional Requirements

  • Senior First Aid Certificate (can be obtained within 3 months of starting)
  • Current NSW Driver’s Licence
