The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Manager to provide strategic leadership across Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and suicide prevention initiatives.

In this influential role, you will lead the development and implementation of a sector-wide Social and Emotional Wellbeing Strategy, working closely with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), communities, government agencies and sector partners. You will also lead a dedicated team, drive policy and advocacy initiatives, and contribute to strengthening culturally safe, community-led wellbeing outcomes across NSW.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Strategy.
  • Provide strategic leadership across Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, AOD, suicide prevention and harm reduction initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with ACCHOs, Aboriginal communities, government agencies and key sector stakeholders.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing team, fostering a collaborative and culturally safe working environment.
  • Drive policy development, advocacy activities and sector-wide initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal wellbeing outcomes.
  • Manage strategic projects, including planning, consultation, implementation, evaluation, budgets, risks and reporting.
  • Represent the organisation at forums, committees and stakeholder engagements across NSW.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, briefings and recommendations to support organisational and sector priorities.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Mental Health, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Community Services, Aboriginal Health, AOD or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within SEWB, mental health, AOD, suicide prevention or community wellbeing programs
  • Experience leading strategy development, policy initiatives or sector-wide projects
  • Proven experience managing teams, programs and projects within complex stakeholder environments
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities and/or the ACCHO sector is highly regarded
  • Willingness and ability to travel across NSW as required

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing frameworks and culturally safe, trauma-informed practice
  • Knowledge of mental health, AOD, suicide prevention and harm reduction approaches
  • Understanding of Aboriginal health policy, Closing the Gap priorities and social determinants of health
  • Strong strategic planning, project management and policy development capability
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, relationship management and communication skills
  • Ability to build trusted partnerships and influence outcomes across diverse stakeholder groups
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
