The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role
We are seeking a proactive and experienced Senior Project Officer to lead and coordinate projects focused on reducing smoking and vaping among Aboriginal communities in NSW. In this role, you will work closely with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), NSW Health, Local Health Districts, government stakeholders, and universities to develop, implement, and evaluate targeted health promotion and policy advocacy initiatives.
You will ensure that all interventions align with Closing the Gap, NSW Tobacco Strategy, and local ACCHO priorities. Through strong partnerships and community support, your work will contribute to improving health outcomes and reducing tobacco-related harm in Aboriginal communities across NSW.
Responsibilities:
- Lead end-to-end project planning and delivery of smoking and vaping-related initiatives.
- Develop and support a Community of Practice with ACCHOs for collaboration, workforce development, and networking.
- Manage reporting to funders and partners, ensuring compliance and KPI alignment.
- Engage with Aboriginal communities and organisations to ensure policy reflects lived experience and local priorities.
- Represent the organisation in government consultations, sector meetings, and strategic forums.
- Contribute to submissions, reports, and policy analysis on tobacco and vaping, including emerging trends like e-cigarette access and marketing.
- Support research translation and community-led evidence on effective approaches.
- Conduct research and community engagement to influence policy and programs.
- Develop timely advice, briefings, and reports on complex health issues.
- Prepare regular project reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation.
Essential Criteria
Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ experience in Aboriginal health, public health, or health promotion, including work with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
- Strong knowledge of tobacco control and vaping prevention, including current legislation, health impacts, and community challenges
- Project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and stakeholder coordination
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including report writing and policy submissions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Ability to travel state-wide to local schools and Aboriginal Medical Services
- Ability to hold a National Police Check and current Working with Children Check
- Formal qualifications in public health, health promotion, community development, or policy
- Experience with evaluation methods and data reporting
- Knowledge of Closing the Gap targets, NSW Aboriginal Health Plan, and relevant state policies
