The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and committed Health Policy Officer to support the development, analysis, and advocacy of policies that strengthen the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector (ACCHS) in NSW. In this important role, you will help shape strategic health and wellbeing initiatives that contribute to both state and national reform agendas, ensuring the voices of Aboriginal communities remain central to health planning and system improvements.

You will work closely across the Health Policy and Closing the Gap portfolios, managing research, data analysis, and reporting to support evidence-based policy outcomes. Your contributions will directly influence health reforms that promote culturally safe, effective, and sustainable services for Aboriginal peoples and communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and draft policy positions, discussion papers, and submissions to influence health and related social policy affecting Aboriginal peoples and the ACCHO sector
  • Develop internal policy briefs and advice for senior management on key initiatives and emerging issues
  • Monitor legislation, government inquiries, and reforms relevant to Aboriginal health to inform strategic policy development
  • Engage with ACCHOs, Aboriginal communities, peak bodies, and government stakeholders to ensure policies reflect lived experiences and local priorities
  • Represent the organisation in consultations, reference groups, forums, and sector collaborations
  • Support strategic advocacy through evidence-based messaging, briefings, and communication materials for both internal and external audiences
  • Contribute to campaign planning, member support, and issue-based lobbying efforts
  • Coordinate small to medium-scale policy projects, including planning, stakeholder engagement, reporting, and evaluation
  • Prepare project updates, evaluations, and final reports for funding bodies and governance requirements

Qualifications:

  • Possess experience in policy development, analysis, or advocacy, preferably in Aboriginal health, primary health, or community services
  • Hold tertiary qualifications in public health, public policy, social science, law, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the health needs and rights of Aboriginal peoples, with a strong commitment to the principles of Aboriginal Community Control
  • Exhibit excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare policy documents, submissions, and briefing papers
  • Show strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills with a collaborative and respectful approach
  • Have the capacity to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing environments, and deliver high-quality work under limited supervision
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in a high-demand work environment
  • Understand government decision-making processes and have experience influencing public policy (desirable)
  • Have experience working within or alongside the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) sector (desirable)
  • Be willing and able to travel state-wide to ACCHOs as required (desirable)
