The General Practitioner provides high-quality, comprehensive primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of all ages. This role works as part of a multidisciplinary team to improve health outcomes, reduce chronic disease, and promote cultural, physical, and emotional wellbeing. The GP delivers clinical services in a culturally safe, respectful, and community-focused environment consistent with the values of TAMS-AC.
Tamworth Aboriginal Medical Service-Aboriginal Corporation (TAMS-AC) strives to enhance the health status of and provide culturally appropriate holistic primary health care to Aboriginal people living in the Tamworth, Gunnedah and Liverpool Plains LGA’s. TAMS-AC does this by involving Aboriginal people in the planning and provision of these health care services and by supporting the TAMS-AC client’s ability to be able to access these services.
Primary Responsibilities
The key duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide culturally safe, patient-centred primary health care to individuals, families, and the wider community.
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments, diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions.
- Develop and review treatment and management plans in collaboration with patients and the care team.
- Promote disease prevention, health education, and healthy lifestyle practices.
- Support the delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health checks and follow-up care.
- Work collaboratively with Aboriginal Health Practitioners, nurses, allied health, and wellbeing teams.
- Provide clinical leadership and mentorship within the multidisciplinary care environment.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all clinical interactions and referrals.
- Participate in case conferences, clinical meetings, and multidisciplinary care planning.
- Support quality improvement activities and contribute to accreditation and compliance processes.
- Assist in the supervision and education of medical students and registrars where appropriate.
- Uphold patient confidentiality, cultural safety, and ethical medical practice at all times.
- Work in accordance with current legislation, clinical guidelines, and TAMS-AC policies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and culturally responsive models of care.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Demonstrated experience in providing comprehensive general practice services
- Sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, culture, and community needs
- Commitment to delivering culturally safe and trauma-informed care
- Excellent communication, clinical reasoning, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Understanding of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) billing processes
- High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- Current National Police History Check.
