The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the Role

The Public Health Manager will oversee and coordinate public health programs and initiatives aimed at supporting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in NSW to enhance community health outcomes. This role involves delivering health programs and health promotion initiatives focusing on wellbeing, lifestyle modification, chronic conditions, and communicable diseases, as well as specialised programs in areas such as hearing health, immunisation, and cancer. The Public Health Manager will be responsible for strategic planning, program development, staff supervision, budget management, and fostering collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of comprehensive public health services.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs to address sector and community health needs.
  • Manage government program contracts and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with ACCHOs to identify local health priorities and provide strategic advice to senior leaders.
  • Lead culturally appropriate health promotion campaigns and review Emergency Plan Toolkits for the ACCHO sector.
  • Coordinate with government agencies during public health emergencies and ensure quality training standards with RTO teams.
  • Align health initiatives with organisational goals and foster partnerships with AH&MRC and relevant agencies.
  • Lead and support staff, including onboarding, training, and performance management.
  • Ensure effective team collaboration and coordinate meetings to advance health priorities.
  • Utilise public health data to guide program development and ensure evidence-based practices.
  • Oversee budget management and financial expenditure, ensuring alignment with program goals.
  • Identify funding sources and apply for grants to support programs.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in public health, epidemiology, social sciences, or a related health discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in public health program management.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing public health programs and initiatives, with specific experience in the context of Aboriginal health.
  • Strong public health knowledge and project management skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building abilities.
  • In-depth understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health and communities.
  • Skilled in data analysis, report preparation, and managing confidential information.
  • Committed to improving health outcomes and supporting Aboriginal Self-Determination.
  • Organised, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and collaborative team player.
  • Flexible with travel requirements and able to work within tight deadlines.
  • Valid National Police Check and Working with Children Check.
